AMURTEL Greece is an all woman’s NGO offering a safe woman’s space for the medical and social care of refugee/migrant women and their infants from pregnancy until 18 months after birth. Mothers who come to AMURTEL are primarily from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and more than 10 different African nations. All our work is done in Farsi, Arabic, French, and English.
We support women with pregnancy, breastfeeding and infant nutrition, sexual reproductive health literacy, and gender-based violence awareness. Besides finding a community that helps them to overcome the often devastating effects of isolation in a new country, mothers gain knowledge and become empowered to help other mothers in their community. It’s heartwarming to see the mothers overcome fears and social taboos while gaining confidence in their abilities to mother well and develop themselves more fully.
Operating since 2015, AMURTEL manages a day center in a central area of Athens and also has an outreach program to refugee camps, shelters, and other local NGO venues.
