Well, I hope you are right that video games are going to be the new saviour of the world because nothing else seems to have worked. Many people believed that Christianity would, but then there were the Crusades, the Inquisition etc. Many who gave away Christianity in the seventies went over to Buddhism, thinking that meditation would bring enlightenment. But then we had Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Even its secular form in terms of transcendental meditation did not seem to work. I needn’t mention Islam because of current problems. Others in the post Beatle era went over to Hinduism hoping for the same result and then we had Ananda Marga.
Many people experience “flow” without having to ascribe to any of the philosophical positions you favour or without feeling the need to be “unified” with other video game players. I do experience it with ceramics. There is nothing to concentrates the attention as watching a.piece of mud spinning around in your hands, and I am sure other people have the same sentsation with knitting and gardening. Any kind of creative endeavour seems to do it for me. But I don’t see that potters, artists and knitters are saving the world. They are just as good, bad and anywhere in between as with any other group of people.
